Five Shows in Four Days

A recap of my spring theatre trip:

APPROPRIATE: Not a great play. Overstuffed and overlong, with too many speeches and too many plot threads. The strong cast and impressive set make it more entertaining than it should be. Had some issues with the tone -- things that seemed disturbing to me were met with laughter. Not sure what to make of the ending.

STEREOPHONIC: Fresh, modern, unique. This one is long, too, but never boring. Reminded me of THE FLICK in that it almost felt like a documentary. Great music that fits the period. The cast is really something. They make you feel for these characters, and want them to succeed, both creatively and personally. A surprisingly emotional experience.

UNCLE VANYA: Flat and dull. It was my first time seeing the play and I wanted to like it, but felt nothing. William Jackson Harper and Alfred Molina make the strongest impressions. Carell is hamstrung by being Carell — almost everything he said or did got a laugh, whether intended or not. Lots of talent onstage, but it doesn’t amount to much.

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE: Propulsive and immediate, driven by a committed performance from Jeremy Strong. Entertaining from start to finish. Director Sam Gold throws in a few flourishes to make it modern, but sticks to a clear time and place. Easy to see why this is a hit.

THE OUTSIDERS: Liked just about everything about it — the score, the cast, the staging. Nice to see a musical that’s comfortable being serious. The music is folk-rock and wonderfully sung, especially by Brody Grant as Ponyboy. The song “Stay Gold” is a standout. Given the source material, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I found it a really nice surprise.

This was my first extended NYC theatre trip in a few years. Fun!
